There are many distinct qualities that can attribute towards the making of a good photographer. Here are some such qualities discussed in detail.
Creativity:
A good photographer has a creative vision and the ability to think outside the box to create unique and visually appealing images. Now, creativity is a very relative term and this may vary from shot to shot but overall, there should always be an attempt to make the image look different and better than a standard snapshot. while Some photographers may be strong in their choice of the content, others may be able to visually compose the various elements of the scene very well. This may be a situation that involves an existing scene that a creative eye may capture from a strong viewpoint, just by changing the angle of view. Or this may be a situation where these elements are rearranged by a creative photographer to make them appear visually appealing in a photograph.
A Good knowledge of the subject being photographed is helpful besides having good technical skils. When you release the shutter, it's not just to capture what exists but to frame it in such a way that it holds, your contribution to the scene and portrays the essence of how you visually perceived the scene.

Technical Skills:
A good photographer must have a solid understanding of the technical aspects of photography, including exposure, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and composition and ofcourse he or she should be able to handle the camera controls very well. When it comes to creativity, same is possible when you are not over concentrating on the technical aspects of photography. How to handle various technical situations, should come as second nature to you. A good photographer should be able to devote more time on the subject than on the camera, which is possible only when he has a great command over is equipment.

Attention to Detail:
A good photographer pays attention to the small details that can make a big difference in the quality of the final image.
This is important in both planned as well as unplanned shots just that you get split seconds when it comes to more candid photographs and other unplanned situations typically in street and wildlife photography. Having good technical knowledge and a flair for creativity helps here as well because, its not just about showing the detail, its about showing the detail or your perspective without making it too obvious. Your shot has to have an overall appeal and yet let the viewer notice what you want to convey in particular.

Patience:
Photography often requires patience to wait for the right moment, the right lighting, or the perfect shot. be it street or wildlife photography or an organsied fashion or Advertising shoot, it helps in all cases. Sometimes, you notice a particular situation but feel that you missed the exact moment as you were a tad bit late in releasing the shutter. This could a moment that is often repeated in nature, maybe in not exactly the same manner but probably a bit diffenet o even better. Wait, and you may accross a similar situation once again.
You may have conceived the shot in a particular manner and style but due to limitations in terms of creativity, acting skills of your actors, desired expressions and body language of your models, lighting glitches, space restrictions, limitations of available equipment or any other reason, if your image is not coming up the way you wanted, hold on and try to remove the obstacles and hurdles before you keep on shooting further. Correcting them now is certainly better than regretting it later on with no option to rescue the shot. As you are the last person to visually see the scene through your camera, you know it the best if you are able to achieve what you desired or what is expected from your clients. Now, this is where your creative and technical skills work for you. If you are good at your craft, you should be able to meet all challenges faster as compared to someone who is not. This allows you to work more patiently on finer aspects instead of the very basics.

Communication Skills:
A good photographer must be able to communicate effectively with clients, models, and other professionals to ensure everyone is on the same page and to capture the desired vision.
No one will get to know what's going on in your mind unless you speak out and communicate. Do not hesitate to communicate with your models, actors and all the supporting crew with the necessary instructions and guidelines to achieve your desired shot. many photographers prefer working with the assistants, makeup artists and stylists, who understand and go along well in terms of communication. If you or your art director wants a particular look, your makeup artist should be able to understand and create the same. Good communication is important to have everyone on the set to be in perfect synch with one common goal of achieving a great shot visually, creatively and technically.
Patience helps here as well because sometimes, due to language barriers or any other unavoidable reasons it gets difficult to put across your perspective to the other person but make sure that you are able to put across your viewpoint, one way or the other.

Passion:
A good photographer has a passion for the art of photography and a desire to constantly improve and evolve their skills. Creativity and technical skills work only half heartedly if you do not have a passion towards Photography or any other Art form for that matter. Photography may involve carrying loads of equipment, standing for long hours in extreme weather conditions, running around, waking up early, dealing with unpleasant situations, managing with equipment limitations and so on. whatever is the genre of photography, one may be pursuing, all this seems to a very small price compared to a great shot one is able to create eventually. Unless you have the passion, all this will appear to a big task.

Adaptability:
A good photographer can adapt to different shooting conditions, such as changing lighting or weather, and can adjust their techniques to capture the best possible image. Many photographers specialise in certain areas only and fail misrably in others because they refuse to adapt. beleive it or not, if your foundation of photography is strong enough, you should be able to adapt yurself to any kind of situation. Its just that you need to smartly adapt your knowldege and apply it according to the requirement of a particualr genre. A product photographer, may not need to have very good communication sills but has no choice but to communicate when handling a fashion shoot as it involves a lot of efforts from the whole team. the model may require continuous guidance if you want to chieve the shots the way you have conceived them. Product photography on the other hand may require less communication.
Any good photographer should be able to handle moving images in terms of cinematography if he is open to adapt himself to the way the equipment handles various technical and creative parameters. many aspects of filmmaking are similar to the ones in case of photography but one must be able to handle well the ones which are not.
